Digital-Image-Stitching.

Problem: I don't own an expensive panoramic camera :[

Solution: Take multiple photos which can be stitched together later on a computer :]

How: With a decent digital camera, suitable lens, sturdy tripod - with panoramic head attached and an amount of fore-sight and creativity.. you can create a panoramic photograph by combining/segmenting a number of photographs together.

The 'typical' horizontal panorama is no longer the only way to stitch images together by the way... these days software is capable of producing horizontal, vertical and spherical (360ยบ) images. Please click on the following links to see some amazing examples of this.

A number of more recent cameras now have the inbuilt ability to create their own 'motion panorama' image with a single press of a button, which, if done correctly, actually produces remarkably good results! The only downside is that these cameras normally cannot do this as a high-resolution RAW file, producing instead, a large sized JPEG.

I (like most people i'm sure) have been fascinated with looking at things in ways beyond our own level of vision allows. It is exciting to know that I can now finally learn the science behind achieving such results myself, with my own equipment. Well to an extent..

Monitor Calibrations / Colour management.

We were required to perform a monitor calibration on both a CIT studio monitor and our own personal monitor that we use at home (desktop or laptop) and report on the results by way of taking screen captures and giving a bit of a run-down in words.

I performed calibrations on the following monitors.

  • EIZO FlexScanSX2462W Professional monitor - view it
  • 15" MacBookPro  - view it
The monitor calibration device used for both was an i1|DisplayPro - view it

My first calibration was on the EIZO FlexScanSX2462W monitor in the CIT computer room. This was both interesting and easy to do thanks to the monitor's manual controls, that allow you to adjust the brightness and contrast as well as RGB values. The following images are screen-captures that were taken as i performed this.












I then made three attempts to perform the same series of tests on my MacBookPro monitor with the very same i1 calibration equipment, but was unsuccessful. It would run through all of the functions without a glitch, but simply wouldn't allow me to create and save a profile - i odd.

Anyway..

 The MacBookPro i purchased, features Apple's premium (non-reflective) display monitor and with a built-in monitor calibration, that allows me to perform a similar, yet less accurate calibration of the screen display. The following images are screen-captures that were taken as i performed this.

Interesting information awaits!

I feel there is a lot of very valuable information on offer for us this semester in the Technology class. It will largely be focused on colour management within digital imaging.

Geoff is a relaxed bloke, who knows a great deal it would seem. His delivery of information can drag-on a bit in class.. Without sounding horrible!

Anyway, I look forward to filling my brain with all the information I can on this subject, because it will no-doubt prove invaluable to me as a professional photographer, especially when it comes to getting images out of the computer and printed for display in the future.

Very exciting i reckon.
